I am a civil engineer working in water resource management. In addition to planning and constructing decentralized water harvesting and supply systems, I am also involved in facilitating negotiations for water rights and use- predominantly those between water required for cash crops and subsistence farming. The main issue I have to contend with is the assumption made by most people that water needs can be clearly divided – the result being that women are only consulted during the planning of drinking water when the men are not even expected to attend the meetings!
