This Resource e-book is a digital document of collected resources from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Nepal and Vietnam on gender and WATSAN. The goal of this e-book is to consolidate and share knowledge on available expertise and information on Gender and WATSAN in, and specific to these countries. It includes names of experts and organizations working in gender and WATSAN; references to available documents, tools and websites (some in the local languages), as well as presents some case studies on gender mainstreaming in WATSAN.

Passport to Mainstreaming Gender in Water Programmes. Key questions for interventions in the agricultural sector (2012)

The Passport was developed for field staff involved in the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of water management projects for agricultural production; technicians and agents in local irrigation and extension services, NGOs and local government employees who work at field level, carry out the assessment of the local situation and have contact and negotiate with stakeholders using available water sources.
It is a practical tool, designed for the rapid identification of the main gender-related problems and gaps that require attention during the design, implementation and monitoring of a agricultural water project or programme. It can also be used to identify gender aspects of existing problems in operational projects and provide inputs for improvements.

Gender Scan Methodology for water utilities (2011)

The Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) has designed this Gender Scan Methodology to assist water and sanitation utilities in identifying how effectively they are mainstreaming gender in their policies, practices, and procedures, and to assist them in identifying areas where they can further strengthen gender mainstreaming.
The gender scan methodology can be used to assess gender mainstreaming opportunities throughout the utility’s operations and management, or can be limited to a specific component or activity the utility would like to focus on.

The document provides guidance on how to mainstream gender into this sector. Access to safe toilets and sustainable sanitation are essential to ensure the health of citizens. It limits the health and economic burden of preventable illnesses, is a prerequisite for ensuring education for all, and for the promotion of economic growth in the poorest countries and regions of the world.

Climate change is a reality, and poses a serious long term threat to society and to the environment. Water is particularly threatened by climate change. With rising temperatures, changes in runoff patterns and increased water evaporation, climate change will greatly affect the distribution of the world’s water and the timing of flows. Such challenges of climate change are not gender neutral. Women and men have different vulnerability and capacity to adapt to climate impacts due to differing roles, opportunities, and access to resources. Conflicts over "troubled waters" - sometimes too much, too little or too polluted - must be avoided.
