Message 47: Helvi Heinonen-Tanski

Helvi Heinonen-Tanski gives his views on what is necessary

What should be done to effectively mainstream gender in water management in agriculture?

We should see better the importance of the women in producing food and other agricultural products

What are the feasible steps that need to be taken by the different stakeholders on the ground and at different levels of decision making/interventions.

  • Measure the true yield of women' yield! Count its price! See that as the salary of women.
  • If women would get more water, could they increase the yields?
  • If women use domestic wastewater for irrigation, they increase yields

How do we operationalise some of the steps proposed in the minimum agenda?

  1. More wastewaters should be used for irrigation of plants. Even small pot cultivation is here useful.
  2. Compost organic wastes and improve the soil structure.

In the last point, if there is somebody ready for scientific cowork - preferring tropical climate, I would be ready, too.
