Juana has a PhD degree in Gender and Water awarded by the Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in December 2011 (see thesis: http://edepot.wur.nl/188580). She also obtained an MSc Degree in Gender and Agriculture at the same university in 1999, and is an agricultural engineer of the Agricultural University ‘La Molina’, in Lima Peru, where she graduated in 1988.

Although Juana was educated to be an agricultural engineer, she has been engaged in gender issues since the beginning of her career (1988). She has a wide experience (over 15 years) in sustainable rural development and gender. Specifically she developed expertise in mainstreaming gender in agriculture, water management, food security and environmental management. In the last 18 years, Juana has worked with different international development organizations on capacity building, advocacy and research activities related to gender, water and SDGs. Apart from this, she give, lecture (as invited lecturer) at the Wageningen University and at the Institute for Water Education (UNESCO-IHE). She also contributed to different training programmes in IWRM, Food Security and gender, in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador (coordinated by the department of Irrigation and Water Engineering of the Wageningen University).

Juana has published a number of articles in books and scientific journals related to issues like: gender and intercultural equity, the role of participatory research in sustainable development projects, water/land rights and social justice, water and sustainable agriculture. Juana has been an active member of the GWA since 2005, and works for GWA since September 2013.
